Rahul, Priyanka Booked: FIR Over Akashvani Bhawan Entry After 8-Hour Sit-In

The protest is over; the legal battle has begun. Rahul Priyanka FIR — Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc MPs for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhawan premises without permission during Tuesday’s protest against the Election Commission.

The development adds a fresh flashpoint to the Opposition’s “vote chori” campaign targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Rahul Priyanka FIR: What Happened

The INDIA bloc march began around 10:30 AM on Tuesday from Parliament House towards Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission’s headquarters, demanding the CEC’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police stopped the march — no permission had been sought or granted.

Rahul Gandhi and other MPs then entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises on Parliament Street and began an over-eight-hour sit-in, insisting a delegation of MPs be allowed to meet Election Commission officials. Police cleared the premises in the evening, forcibly removing the leaders.

Around 250 people, including about 50 MPs — among them K.C. Venugopal, Pawan Khera, K. Suresh and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring — were detained and taken to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. They were released a little after 10 PM.

The Fallout

Rahul Gandhi had earlier alleged that the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the RSS chief have “hijacked” the country with the CEC’s help — words he said would invite action for “treason” when his side is in power. The BJP dismissed the march, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan calling it another attempt to “relaunch Rahul Gandhi” and accusing the Congress of wanting to “spread anarchy.”

The Rahul Priyanka FIR case ensures the Akashvani Bhawan standoff — already the Opposition’s loudest street protest of the season — will now play out in courtrooms too.
