The planned execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee took a dramatic turn on September 30, 2026. After the US Supreme Court cleared the way for the lethal injection, prison officials attempted to carry it out — but the Christa Pike execution attempt reportedly failed, and Pike was taken to an off-site medical facility.
What Happened During the Christa Pike Execution Attempt
Pike, 50, had been scheduled for execution at 10:00 am CDT at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. According to her lawyers, witnesses saw her heart still beating after two doses of the lethal injection drugs, and she could still be heard breathing. The Tennessee Department of Correction said it had followed the state’s established execution protocol and confirmed that Pike was taken to an off-site medical facility. Her condition was not immediately disclosed.
The Supreme Court’s last-minute decision
The Christa Pike execution had already been halted about an hour before the scheduled time by the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, which wanted more time to consider whether allegations that Pike was sexually abused as a child had been fully considered at her original sentencing. Late Wednesday, the Supreme Court vacated that stay in a 6-3 decision, clearing the way for Tennessee to proceed. Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.
Who is Christa Pike
Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, her romantic rival. She was 18 at the time of the crime and is the only woman on Tennessee’s death row. Had the execution proceeded, she would have become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, and the first woman executed in the US since 2023.
Why the case was controversial
Pike’s attorneys, along with more than 100 women’s advocacy groups and abuse experts, argued that her severe childhood trauma had not been properly weighed, and that the lethal injection process itself could amount to cruel and unusual punishment. Independent UN rights experts had also urged authorities to halt the execution. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee denied Pike’s clemency request.
What happens next
It is not yet clear when — or whether — the state will attempt another Christa Pike execution. The failed attempt has put the case back in the national spotlight after decades. Read more at USA Today.
