Rushdie was transported to a local hospital by helicopter with a stab wound to the neck and chest, police said
Police have arrested 24-year-old Hadi Matar from Fairview, New Jersey. State Police Maj. Eugene Staniszewski said a motive hasn't been determined.
The 75-year-old world-famous author was a guest speaker at a lecture series at the Chautauqua Institution when the incident happened.
According to the AP, Rushdie's agency claimed he had surgery and was on a ventilator Friday night with a damaged liver, cut nerves in his arm, and that he could lose an eye.
Staniszewski also said that the interviewer, Henry Reese, was treated at a local hospital for a minor head injury and has since been released.
Between 2004 and 2006, he was president of PEN America. From 2006 to 2014, he was chairman of the PEN World Voices International Literary Festival.
In a statement, PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel said that the group was shocked to hear about the attack.
