UPI PIN Blocked? 3 Ways to Reset It and Start Paying Again

Seeing a UPI PIN blocked message at the checkout counter is stressful, especially when you are sure you typed the right PIN. The good news is that this block is temporary, and in most cases you do not have to wait at all. You can reset the PIN in a few minutes and start paying again immediately. This guide explains why the block happens, how to reset your PIN in Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, how to do it without a debit card using Aadhaar, and the one limit that applies after a reset.

Why Your UPI PIN Gets Blocked

Your UPI PIN is verified by your bank, not by the app on your phone. Google Pay’s official help page states the rule clearly: if you enter the wrong UPI PIN three times within 24 hours, your UPI payments are temporarily blocked for 24 hours. After two wrong entries in the same period, the app warns you to reset the PIN before the lock kicks in.

The block sits on your bank account, not on one app. That is why the same account shows as blocked in every UPI app you try. The 24-hour restriction is a security feature designed to stop someone who has your phone from guessing the PIN by trial and error.

Also remember that your UPI PIN is different from your phone’s screen lock, your debit card’s ATM PIN and the OTP sent to your mobile. Entering one in place of the other is the most common reason people burn through their three attempts.

UPI PIN Blocked? You Have 2 Options

Option 1: Wait 24 hours. If you are not in a hurry and you are sure you remember the correct PIN, simply wait. After 24 hours from the third wrong attempt, you can try again with the same PIN. Do not keep guessing in between, because fresh wrong attempts can extend your problem.

Option 2: Reset the PIN and pay immediately. Google Pay confirms that resetting your UPI PIN lets you make transactions right away, without waiting for the 24-hour block to end. A reset needs either your debit card details or your Aadhaar details, depending on what your bank supports. The reset steps for each major app are below.

If your payments are failing for a different reason, such as a bank server issue or a wrong UPI ID, our guide on how to fix UPI not working in Google Pay covers those cases step by step.

How to Reset a Blocked UPI PIN in Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm

Google Pay: Open the app and tap your profile picture, then tap Bank account. Select the account whose PIN is blocked and tap Forgot UPI PIN. Follow the on-screen steps: verify with your debit card’s last six digits and expiry date, or choose Aadhaar if offered, enter the OTP sent by your bank, and set a new PIN.

PhonePe: Tap your profile picture, scroll to your bank accounts and select the blocked account. Tap Reset UPI PIN (shown as Change/Reset PIN on some versions). Verify using your debit card details or Aadhaar, enter the OTP, and create the new PIN.

Paytm: Go to your profile, open Payment Settings and then UPI PIN, or open the bank account under UPI settings and choose Forgot UPI PIN. Complete the card or Aadhaar verification, enter the OTP and set the new PIN. Menu names can differ slightly between app versions, but the flow is the same everywhere: select account, choose reset, verify, set new PIN.

No Debit Card? Reset Your UPI PIN With Aadhaar

This is the option most guides skip. Under NPCI’s framework, banks must offer Aadhaar OTP authentication as an alternative to the debit card for setting or resetting a UPI PIN. It was introduced for customers who do not have a debit card, or whose card is inactive. Google Pay’s help pages also confirm that a reset can be done with your Aadhaar card details instead of a debit card.

To use the Aadhaar route, three things must match: your Aadhaar number should be linked to the bank account, the mobile number registered with Aadhaar should be active, and it should ideally be the same number registered with your bank. In the reset flow, choose the Aadhaar option, enter the first six digits of your Aadhaar number, and then enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.

NPCI has also rolled out Aadhaar face authentication for setting and resetting the UPI PIN, which uses the UIDAI FaceRD app and needs neither card details nor an OTP. It is being enabled bank by bank, so if your app shows a face-authentication option during reset, you can use that instead.

One honest limitation: the Aadhaar option only appears if your bank and app have enabled it for your account. If you do not see it, the debit card route, your bank’s mobile banking app, or a branch visit are the remaining options.

Why Switching Apps Will Not Unblock Your PIN

Many users uninstall Google Pay and try PhonePe or Paytm, hoping the block will disappear. It will not. Because the block is recorded by your bank against the account, every app that connects to that account hits the same wall. A reset done in any one app, however, fixes the PIN for all apps, since the new PIN is stored by the bank.

Switching apps is still useful in one situation: if the reset option or the Aadhaar option is missing in your current app, another app connected to the same account may show it. But the reset itself, not the app change, is what removes the block.

Limits That Apply After a PIN Reset

Expect a short cooling period after a fresh PIN reset or new UPI registration. Many banks, Bank of Baroda’s published UPI limits being one example, cap transactions at ₹5,000 per transaction during the first 24 hours after a PIN reset. This is an anti-fraud measure, so plan any large payment for the next day.

After the cooling period, the normal limits return: up to ₹1 lakh per day for regular person-to-person and merchant payments, with higher caps for categories such as tax payments, hospitals and education. Your bank can set lower limits than the NPCI maximum, so check your bank’s page if a large payment fails.

And if a payment has already failed with money deducted, do not confuse that with a PIN block. A deduction without a completed payment follows a different refund timeline, explained in our guide on UPI payment failed but money deducted.

Stay Safe While Resetting

Never share your UPI PIN, card details or OTP with anyone who calls or messages you claiming to be from your bank or an app. Banks and NPCI never ask for these. Complete the reset only inside your UPI app or your bank’s official app, and ignore links sent over SMS, WhatsApp or social media that promise to “unblock” your PIN. Such links are a common fraud pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Use the "Forgot UPI PIN" option in your UPI app and reset the PIN with your debit card or Aadhaar verification. Google Pay confirms that after a reset you can make transactions immediately, without waiting for the block to end.

Yes, if your bank supports it. NPCI's framework allows Aadhaar OTP authentication instead of a debit card for setting or resetting a UPI PIN. Your mobile number must be linked to both Aadhaar and your bank account. Aadhaar face authentication is also being rolled out for PIN set and reset.

No. The block is placed by your bank on the account, not by the app, so every UPI app will show the same block for that account. Resetting the PIN in any one app removes the block for all apps.

Many banks apply a cooling-period cap of ₹5,000 per transaction for the first 24 hours after a PIN reset or fresh UPI registration. Normal limits, up to ₹1 lakh per day for regular payments, apply after that period.

No. The UPI PIN is a separate 4 or 6-digit code used only to approve UPI payments, while the ATM PIN belongs to your debit card. Confusing the two is a common reason for failed attempts and PIN blocks.
